CENTER RING

By Walt & Bonnie Phillips

there she is folks!
pica the queen of the cats!
the marvel of the universe!
the fairest of the fair!

we shout several things like this
at her
and she just sits and blinks
at us
secure in knowing nothing untoward
is at hand
we're just being our usual unhinged
selves

THE GOOD LIFE

By Walt & Bonnie Phillips

she's adept at sleeping
on either of her sides
her right when she's up against
him
and her left when she's up against
her
she likes to keep them happy this
way
the only drawback to the nightly bliss
is that he
occasionally snores abruptly
and wickedly
and this can truly rev up
the old kitty ticker
for a bit

HOW CAN SHE NOT?

By Walt & Bonnie Phillips

how can she not
like clams?
they're sea stuff aren't they?
she's a cat
she's supposed to like sea
stuff
listen, cat
you're supposed to like
clams and crab and
mackerel and tuna and
haddock
she walks away
she knows after much
discussion we'll wise up
and put down some knockout
chicken flavored dry stuff
and some fresh water
if you don't mind

Since 1959, Walt Phillips' poetry has been published in numerous small press publications. His poems are also included in many online collections. At his daughter Bess Kemp's suggestion, Walt and his wife, Bonnie, collaborated on these poems about pica, who Walt describes as "the black and white ruler of the domicile."

The Walt Phillips Gallery, which features his art work and poetry, is dedicated to the memory of his wife of 43 years.
