~A Tribute to Midnight Crowley~

Midnight on the Deck
October 31, 1990 - February 19, 2001
It seems like only yesterday that we found Midnight on the side of our country road on a cold, December afternoon. He ran to me as soon as I stepped out of the car. He was half-starved and showed signs of abuse; my husband didn't think he'd make it through the night. But Midnight was a survivor. For over ten years he was our loyal and loving companion. These are a few notes from my journal during the first month Midnight lived with us:

12/13/90: Stopped on SC Rd and picked up starving, wounded kitten. A dog was waiting at our gate.

[Finding two animals within a block of each other was probably a coincidence.. Of course, we hoped that the dog had simply strayed from her home and that her family would find her.]

12/15/90: George brought the dog to house and fed, watered her - "Sandy" ... Ditcher, Dobbin, and Rascal don't favor taking in the homeless.

12/28/90: Midnight and Rascal have become real buddies ... Rascal grooms the kitten and plays rousing games of hide & seek and chase. [Midnight and Sandy soon became friendly playmates, too. It took Midnight a little longer to win Ditcher and Dobbin over.]

12/30/90: Football game interrupted by power failure which lasted 12 hours. Ouside temperature 10 degrees F. Power outage affected neighbors for miles around. Electric company trucks on our property in middle of night. No central heat or running water, but we have plenty of water drawn and bottled for emergency, propane tank filled, plenty of firewood, blankets, and cats. [This was definitely a four cat night!]

Midnight is now roaming at Rainbow Bridge with his beloved Rascal, Scrappy, and many family members and friends. His brave spirit lives on in our hearts forever. His web page, Midnight's Meadow, remains online as a special tribute to our beloved cat.

We have been consoled by the thoughts and purrs of our friends, many who only knew Midnight through his online activities. We wish we could share each postcard and message we've received.
